Today is fun Friday!  This week I decided to post some of our winter crafts and art projects.  I didn't post these before and they are so cute I didn't want them to get forgotten in my dusty picture files ;)

The kids do the entire project by themselves.  I don't do any prep work.  I love doing art projects this way because they all turn out completely different and they are working on cutting, spacing, gluing and creativity skills.

March of the penguins.  The kids chose a emperor penguin or a macaroni penguin.  They wrote the name or beginning sound of the name on the belly of the penguin.

This penguin was created during "free art", the child went to the art center and created this penguin completely on her own.  This is creative learning at it's best!!!

More Penguin Activities!!

Are you all getting sick of hearing about penguins yet??  Haha, well too bad I have more activities to share.  The Chart above is what we did today with preschool to review the facts we have learned about penguins.  For some of our activities we used Deanna Jump's Penguin unit http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Penguins-Math-and-Literacy-Fun

We fed the penguins gold fish crackers.  After we fed them we counted how many fish we fed them and wrote the number on a piece of paper.

Classifying penguins by type.  They sorted the penguin and placed them by their type.  On the back of every picture was the name of each type of penguin for self checking.

Penguin sorting.  This is a more difficult sorting activity because the penguin manipulatives look very similar so they really have to pay attention to the details.

We discussed how male penguins choose the best pebble to give their mates, just like daddies give mommies a rock to ask her to marry him.  This activity is a fine motor activity placing pebbles on fish suction cups to remind them of this fact. 

Label the penguin.  After they labeled the penguin, they drew their own penguins and cut out strips to label.  This is our Pip puppet form the adventures of Pip.

One of our science activities we did was illustrate how the penguins' waxy feathers do not get too wet in the water.  We drew penguins and pushed really hard with the crayons, then water color painted over them watching the water and paint bead up and roll away.

January/Winter Math and practical life "Works"

 March of the Penguins

Winter is actually here for real!! We had a little dry spell but now we have snow to prove it. Here are pictures of what is on our shelves right now. I am just posting our new winter works that are out right now. We are learning about Antarctica, Penguins and Snow. Living in Montana, this is one of my favorite units to teach. There is something to teach in just about every standard and they are all fun!!

 

Our Penguin sensory box was a huge hit!! I used floam, jewels, foam snowflakes and small pebbles. The kids had a blast recreating thier own Antarctic scene.

For Math this month we are working on shapes, one to one correspondence, AB and AABB patterns and sorting shapes.

Math links

Pouring into 2 cups, sifting flour, sweeping into a dustpan, lacing, pinching, scooping and cutting are all the practical life activities we are working on.  Most of the kids have mastered pouring, which is exciting at such a young age.  Sifting flour was a great activity to teach self control and control of space.  Only a few of the younger children are still enjoying the pinching and scooping works.  Sweeping crinkle paper into a dustpan was fun to watch the kids be "allowed" to make a mess and to see how easy it was just to clean it up.
